Chocolate cake is a cake flavored with melted chocolate, cocoa powder, or both. The main ingredient used to make brownies is chocolate, but other ingredients such as fudge, vanilla buttercream, and other sweeteners can also be added. Before 1890 to 1900, chocolate-related recipes were mostly chocolate drinks, and chocolate was generally only used as filling and coloring for making cakes. In 1886, American chefs began adding chocolate to cake batter, creating America’s first chocolate cake.
